Children's Teeth

Did you know the best time to begin caring for your children's teeth is before the first baby tooth even arrives? Teeth actually begin forming during the second trimester of pregnancy. At birth, your baby already has 20 primary teeth, some of which are fully developed in the jaw.

Run a damp washcloth over your baby's gums following feedings to prevent a buildup of bacteria. Once the first teeth begin emerging, brush them with a soft child's toothbrush.

The American Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit take place by their first birthday.

Dr. Williamson will explain proper brushing and flossing techniques and conduct a modified exam while your child sits in your lap. Those early visits can detect emerging dental problems and help your child become accustomed to regular dental checkups.

In between checkups, your child should brush at least twice a day and floss. Children as young as two or three can begin to use toothpaste as long as they are supervised and do not ingest large amounts. Remember: you are your child's best teacher. They will emulate your good behaviors.
