Root canal

When Dr. Williamson talks about Gentle Dental Care, it means she does her best

to take fear and anxiety out of procedures, such as root canals.

"Root canals have gotten a bad rap over the years," Dr. Williamson said. "Today's procedures, with the special attention we give to pain management, are no more painful than what you would experience when you have a cavity filled."

A root canal is used to repair and save a tooth that is infected or badly decayed. During the procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth

is cleaned and sealed. Without treatment, the tissue around the tooth becomes infected.

Signs you may need a root canal include:

•  A severe toothache when you chew or apply pressure to the tooth

•  Extended sensitivity to hot or cold

•  Darkening of the tooth

•  Swelling and tenderness in the gums

•  A persistent or recurring pimple on the gums.

If you believe you have an infected tooth, please call 219.663.4200.
