Gum Disease
Gum disease is not just for adults anymore. Changes in the diet of American children has increased the number of teens who are developing the condition, which ranges from inflammation and bleeding of the gums to major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In its most severe form, gum disease causes tooth loss.
Gum disease is largely treatable if it is detected early. Dr. Williamson begins by diagnosing the problem and working with you to treat it.
Gum disease – also known as periodontal disease – is caused by sticky, colorless plaque that forms on teeth. The bad news on plaque: The longer the bacteria remains on your teeth, the more harmful it becomes.
Brushing and flossing help; so do regular trips to the dentist where hygienists Aimee, Lisa and Christy clean your teeth and remove the buildup, known as tartar. Risk factors include:
• Smoking
• Hormonal changes in girls/women
• Medications that reduce the flow of saliva and cause abnormal growth of gum tissue
• Illnesses, such as diatbetes, cancer or AIDS along with their treatments
• Heredity
