Dental Emergencies
Toothaches: Rinse your mouth with warm water. Use dental floss to remove any lodged food. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek to reduce swelling. Never put aspirin or any other painkiller against the gums because it may burn the gum tissue. See Dr. Williamson as soon as possible.
Objects caught between the teeth: Try using dental floss to gently and carefully remove the object. If you can't remove it, call Dr. Williamson.
Abscess: Infections that occur around the root of the tooth or in the space between the tooth and gums are a serious condition that need be seen as soon as possible. If you discover a pimple-like swelling on your gum that is painful, call Dr. Williamson's office to schedule an appointment right away. To ease pain, rinse your mouth several times a day with a solution made from dissolving 1/2 teaspoon salt with 8 ounces of water.
